NO CORNERS TO HIDE

Introducing No Corners to Hide, a amazing series inspired by the legends of Islay.

Frank Quitely reinterprets this legendary story by paying homage to myth which has
shaped the village of Bowmore and too, our distillery home.

As the story goes, back in 1837, on a clear winter’s evening, the devil visited the church in Bowmore. This is no ordinary church. Strikingly round in shape, purposely built, in preparation for such a visit as there were no corners in which the devil could hide. Despite the best efforts of the local congregation who chased the devil from the church to the Bowmore distillery where they bolted the gates and locked the doors. But search proved fruitless and the devil had vanished. That night, The Maid of Islay, a small paddle steamer used for transporting Bowmore whisky, was loaded with casks for the mainland.

The devil was never found, but it’s believed that he hid himself in a cask, where ironically, there too are no corners to hide.

Bowmore No Corners To Hide 23-year-old was
matured for 21 years in American oak ex-bourbon hogsheads, then for two additional years in Essencia barriques, bottled at 51.5% vol. and is said to contain devilish notes of acacia honey, marzipan and spice.

It has been suggested that the circular design
of Bowmore's Round Church was intended to
ensure that there were no corners in which
the devil could hide.

Beginning its first twenty years in cask, the spirit was nurtured by American Oak hogsheads, creating the signature style of Bowmore. Much like the lovers in this story, the whisky underwent its own transformation as three years of further maturation in a pair of heady cask styles: Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry, adding depth with rich and luscious fruit notes.

The oldest release in the Frank Quitely series, this exceptional single malt embarks on its definitive journey in American Oak hogsheads, which embodies the signature style of Bowmore. Much like the lovers however, this whisky underwent its own transformation with two years of further maturation in first fill Pinot Noir Wine Barriques, adding a distinctive richness with expressive fruit and nut notes.

The Round Church of Bowmore

The Bowmore "Round Church", as it is often known, was built in 1767. It has a
highly unusual circular design, copied by some churches built in the 1960s.

It has been suggested that the circular design was intended to
ensure that there were no corners in which the devil could hide.

The Round Church stands in a magnificent
location at the head of the village of Bowmore's
Main Street. From here it dominates the village
and offers views down the centre of Main Street
to Loch Indaal and beyond. It has been described
as Islay's best known building, and, give or take
a few distilleries, that is very probably true.

You’ll know the story of how the devil was chased all the way from Bowmore’s Round Church into the gates of Bowmore Distillery, only to escape – so it’s said – in a whisky cask bound for the mainland. What you’ll be less familiar with is the devilishly inspired cask selection for Bowmore's The Devil's Casks releases.
